Common Core & Essential Standards

North Carolina joined a national movement to adopt common standards and assessments. Currently, standards for what students should know and be able to do vary among states, as does the difficulty of the assessments used to determine whether students are meeting those standards.

The Common Core State Standards provide learning goals to ensure that students meet college and work expectations and are prepared to succeed in a global society. The full Common Core standards can be viewed at www.corestandards.org.

In addition to the adoption of the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics, North Carolina also adopted new Essential Standards in all other K-12 subject areas.
