Spanish Dual Language Immersion
The Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program began in 2024 at three ECPPS elementary schools: Central, J.C. Sawyer, and Northside. This school year, the program expanded to all elementary schools with the addition of P.W. Moore, Sheep-Harney, and Weeksville. This districtwide growth provides students with a high-quality bilingual learning environment that supports language development, cultural understanding, and academic success.
Beginning in kindergarten, students are immersed in Spanish for a significant portion of their school day, learning core subjects like math, science, and social studies in Spanish. This approach not only helps students develop fluency in Spanish but also enhances cognitive skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking. As students progress, they maintain strong academic performance in both Spanish and English, ultimately gaining proficiency in both languages. The program also fosters cultural awareness and appreciation, preparing students to thrive in diverse environments. By participating in this program, students gain a lifelong advantage in career opportunities, global communication, and personal growth.
The benefits of being bilingual include:
- Enhanced cognitive development, problem-solving, and academic performance
- Easier time with skills like using logic, focusing, remembering, and decision making
- Greater cultural awareness and social skills
- More career opportunities and higher salaries as adults
- Long-term cognitive benefits that support lifelong learning
DLI is just the start of a K-12 language pathway in ECPPS. In middle school, DLI will continue along with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program. In high school, students can apply to join the IB diploma program and eventually graduate from high school with an internationally recognized diploma.
