Exceptional Children / Support Services

Special education services are initiated through a referral process. A parent, teacher, or involved individual with in-depth knowledge of a child’s skills, may submit a written statement describing the specific concern that appears to be impeding the child’s academic success. The written concern is submitted to the child’s principal, teacher, or other school professional. Once the written concern is received, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Team meeting is convened and the child’s parent is invited to participate as a contributing member of this team. This team meeting allows the parent and other members of the team to discuss the specific concern, develop practical interventions to bridge the child’s academic success, and delineate whether a referral is needed for comprehensive assessments.
