ECPPS Announces New Hires and Assignments

The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Board of Education recently approved the following recommendations for new hires and assignments.

New hires include the following:

Fudge Named Central Elementary Principal

Mr. Sammy Fudge was recommended and approved as the principal of Central Elementary School.  Fudge holds a bachelor’s degree in social science and reading from Eastern Oregon State College as well as a master’s degree in curriculum development and special education from Regent University.  He also earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership from Regent University.  Additionally, Fudge has completed all requirements, but the dissertation, for a doctoral degree in educational planning, policy and leadership from the College of William and Mary.  

Fudge has 37 years of experience in education which includes serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of secondary education.  He is currently serving as a middle school principal in Roanoke, Virginia.  Fudge has extensive experience in education and school administration.  He has proven success with increasing student achievement in schools he has served.  “Mr. Fudge will be a tremendous asset to ECPPS and will serve the families and staff at Central Elementary well,” shared Superintendent Edmonds.  “He has a strong background in school administration, leading students and staff to reach their full potential.  We look forward to working with Mr. Fudge and welcome him to the ECPPS team .” 

Mr. Fudge shared, “It is an honor to join the ECPPS team and look forward to working with the students, staff and families at Central Elementary School.  I am excited to meet the Wildcat family and to become an active part of the school community.”

Grant Named P.W. Moore Assistant Principal

Ms. Angelia Grant was recommended and approved as the assistant principal at P.W. Moore Elementary School.  Grant holds a bachelor's degree in human services from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as a master’s degree in special education adapted curriculum from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  She also earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Grant has 16 years of experience in education which includes serving as a parent and family advocate, teacher, student services coordinator, and Occupational Course of Study Specialist.  “Ms. Grant will be a great addition to the administrative team at P.W. Moore Elementary School,” shared Superintendent Edmonds.  “Her prior experience included work in Title I schools as well as advocacy for parents and families which will provide excellent support for the work that is taking place at P.W. Moore.  We look forward to working with Ms. Grant in her new role with ECPPS.”

Ms. Grant shared, “I am excited and proud to be a part of the ECPPS family. While we all have experienced unique challenges during this global pandemic, it is my desire to support a nurturing educational environment that continues to challenge our students to become lifelong learners.  I feel that my new position is like a blank book and I am ready to create new chapters at P. W. Moore Elementary School.”

McPherson Named Curriculum and Instruction Management Coordinator

Ms. Karen McPherson was recommended and approved as the Curriculum and Instruction Management Coordinator for ECPPS.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in management information, from Elizabeth City State University.  She also holds a master’s degree in school administration from Elizabeth City State University.

Ms. McPherson has 17 years of experience in education which includes serving as a teacher for Camden County Schools and education consultant for business, finance and information technology for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction where she is currently employed.  Superintendent Edmonds shared, “Ms. McPherson has extensive experience in Career and Technical Education, specifically in the area of curriculum and instruction.  She will be a tremendous asset to our Career and Technical Education Program and to the district as well.  We look forward to working with Ms. McPherson in her role with ECPPS.”

“I look forward to combining my passion for enlightening and supporting CTE teachers,” shared Ms. McPherson. “I firmly believe in the goals of CTE and its lifetime impact on students. I am proud to be part of CTE’s mission to empower teachers and students in ECPPS. I look forward to coaching CTE teachers and helping them celebrate their classroom successes.”

New assignments within the district include:

Kelly Cowell - Beginning Teacher Coordinator

Ms. Cowell will serve as the ECPPS Beginning Teacher Coordinator.  She has worked for ECPPS since 2007 and served in education for 16 years.  Ms. Cowell has worked as a teacher assistant, teacher, instructional coach and beginning teacher coordinator for elementary education.  She will now serve as the coordinator for all beginning teachers in the district.  Ms. Cowell holds a bachelor’s degree in English as well as a master’s degree in school administration from Elizabeth City State University.  

Shelia Hughes - Director of Career and Technical Education

Ms. Hughes will serve as the ECPPS Director of Career and Technical Education.  She has worked for ECPPS since 2013 serving as Career and Technical Education Teacher for Health Sciences through November 2019, then as Career and Technical Education Coordinator.  Ms. Hughes worked in the healthcare profession from 1989 until she began her career with ECPPS in 2013.  She holds an associate’s degree in nursing from Roanoke Chowan Community College, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kaplan University School of Nursing, and a master’s degree in Career and Technical Education Administration from Concordia University.

Dexter Jackson-Heard - Director of Digital Media and Innovative Technology

Mr. Jackson-Heard will serve as the ECPPS Director of Digital Media and Innovative Technology.  He has worked for ECPPS since 2018 serving as principal.  Mr. Jackson-Heard has 18 years of experience in education.  He has served as a teacher, career development coordinator, assistant principal, athletic director, and principal.  Mr. Jackson-Heard has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Virginia State University and a master’s degree in education administration from Grand Canyon University.

Marlene Wilkins - Director of Maintenance

Ms. Wilkins will serve as the ECPPS Director of Maintenance.  She has worked for ECPPS since 1995, serving as teacher assistant, computer lab manager and office manager for the maintenance department.  She has 15 years of experience serving as office manager for the maintenance department.  Ms. Wilkins holds an associate’s degree from College of The Albemarle.
