The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public School District is honored to have one of our students selected to participate in the 2021 North Carolina Governor’s School.  Emma Montero of Northeastern High School is among rising high school seniors statewide, selected to attend the five-week summer program for academically or intellectually gifted students.  Montero is the daughter of Andy and Karin Montero.

Students selected for Governor’s School were nominated in one of ten curriculum areas. Montero was nominated for social science and will attend Governor’s School East in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Governor's School curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests or grades. The 2021 session is tentatively scheduled to begin on June 20th and conclude on July 28th.

Montero shared that she was notified by Ms. Bartlett, AIG Facilitator, that she had been nominated for Governor’s School.  Once she was aware of her nomination, she was excited to apply and felt it was an opportunity she did not want to miss.  She was surprised and grateful when she found out she was accepted. She shared that she spent quite a bit of time completing the application and was pleased to know it was time well spent.  "Governor’s School will give me an opportunity to grow and learn from students with different thoughts and perspectives," shared Montero. "It will allow me to learn beyond the classroom."  Although it has not yet been confirmed whether Governor’s School will be held in person or virtually, Montero shared that she would like to experience campus life as well as staying in a college dormitory.

The Governor’s School of North Carolina, founded in 1963 by former Governor Terry Sanford, is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. More information about Governor’s School is available at www.ncgovschool.org.
