ECPPS Announces Calendar Changes Due to Time Missed for Snow

The month of January brought significant snow for our area. ECPPS had to make the decision to close schools several days during the month due to treacherous road conditions throughout the county. The amount of days/time missed created quite a few changes to the school calendar to ensure we are meeting state law which requires 1025 hours or 185 days of school for students. In addition, teachers are required to have a 215 day calendar. The amount of days missed has limited us in the number of days/time available for future inclement weather during the 2017-2018 school year.

One of the changes in the calendar is the addition of 15 minutes to the instructional day for students. The additional 15 minutes per day will provide the district with available time to use prior to using spring break for makeup days. Schools will release 15 minutes later each day beginning January 29th. Superintendent Cartner met with principals and the Teacher Advisory Council to discuss the potential changes to the calendar and to get input from staff. The majority of staff favored adding 15 minutes to the school day in an attempt to preserve spring break, should there be any future school schedule changes. Dr. Cartner expressed his appreciation for teachers being willing to add minutes to the instructional day as a means of making up time.

The next inclement weather days will require us to use Friday, March 30th (the Friday prior to spring break week) and Monday, May 28th (Memorial Day) as makeup days.

The Board of Education for Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools approved the recommended calendar changes listed below to make up for days/time missed due to snow during January.
