Northeastern High Prepares to Celebrate 50th

Northeastern High School (NHS) was established in 1969, with 1969-1970 being the first school year. The school is already celebrating many 50th markers this year and the celebration will continue into 2019-2020. The beginning of the 2018-2019 school year marked the 50th first day of school for Northeastern and while the first homecoming did not take place until fall 1970, the school will celebrate the inaugural sports teams during homecoming this year.

Northeastern is encouraging all alumni to come out for homecoming this year on October 12th. There will be designated areas for tailgating, as well as tents filled with Northeastern memorabilia. Northeastern will play Currituck that night beginning at 7:30 p.m. The grounds will be open at 5:00 p.m. for tailgating and the gates will open at 6:00 p.m. The tailgating event is being hosted by the school; therefore, alcohol is prohibited. Tickets for the football game are $6.00 each.

Plans to celebrate 50 years of Northeastern High School was underway last year; however, Principal Angela Cobb is working with a team to ensure the classes and history of the school are recognized as much as possible. The faculty and many alumni gathered on Saturday, September 29th to create a video to kick off the "Northeastern 50 and Fabulous" celebrations.

This year the school will celebrate the 50th first day of school, the 50th prom, the 50th yearbook edition, the 50th graduation ceremony and many other events that took place during that first year of school. The 50th homecoming as well as the first graduating class of 1969-1970 will be celebrated next year.

ECPPS would like to ask the alumni of NHS to follow the Facebook page for Northeastern High School for notices of special events scheduled during the course of this year and next. Events will also be posted on the district website calendar at
